WASHINGTON, DC – A picture can be worth a thousand words, but pictures and audio and information directly from safety experts can be worth thousands of safe helicopter flights. The United States Helicopter Safety Team (www.USHST.org) this week debuts Reel Safety, a new series of slide presentations that combine audio, photos and video with essential information aimed at enhancing helicopter safety. The initial Reel Safety topics include:
“Reel Safety allows us to provide helicopter pilots and operators with important safety information quickly and effectively,” explains Nick Mayhew, General Manager, Bristow Academy-Florida Campus and USHST Training Working Group Chairman. “Each presentation is just five to six minutes, but they are filled with critical information that can help both new pilots and veteran helicopter operators alike.”
Reel Safety presentations can be found on the USHST web site and on the International Helicopter Safety Team web site (www.IHST.org). Throughout this year, USHST members plan to expand the number of topics to 15 to 20. A direct link to the Reel Safety page can be found here: http://ihst.org/Default.aspx?tabid=3210.
The USHST and the IHST promote safety and work to reduce accidents. The IHST organization was formed in 2006 to lead a government and industry cooperative effort to address factors that were affecting an unacceptable helicopter accident rate.
Prior to 2006, the number of worldwide civil helicopter accidents was rising at a rate of 2.5 percent per year. Since 2006, the number of accidents worldwide has been decreasing by an annual rate of 2 percent.
During 2014, the total number of U.S. civil helicopter accidents reached its lowest level in more than three decades. In addition, the U.S. helicopter accident rate has been cut by more than half (54 percent) during the past 10 years.
More information about the IHST, its reports, safety tools, and Safety Bulletins can be obtained at its web site (www.IHST.org) and on the IHST Facebook page.
